Crew Call!, the Complete Film and Video Student Directory is the first and only publication of its kind serving Los Angeles and San Diego film students. We work closely with schools such American Film Institute (AFI), the Los Angeles Film School (LAFS) and others to create a comprehensive directory, allowing students to contact each other to work together on projects as well as make them available for work on paid independent productions.

Potential advertisers are only contacted because we, ourselves, enjoy their products or feel our readers will. The businesses benefit by expanding into an exclusive niche market and we benefit by raising funds to print our book, a valuable resource to the student filmmaking community.

Many businesses appreciate the benefit of exposing their products and services to students. Such businesses make excellent incomes from students but, more importantly, form a lasting relationship that continues throughout the filmmaker’s career. A filmmaker who brings you his first semester class project for processing will be the same filmmaker who brings you his $500,000 feature film a few years later.

It is vital to provide quality services to student filmmakers at affordable prices such as craft services, film processing, printing, etc. Student filmmakers benefit by having reasonably priced quality services at their fingertips in our directory. Your advertisement, especially when offering a discounted rate, provides students access to the necessary tools to learn their trade and launch their careers in this very competitive industry.

TARGET AUDIENCE (READERSHIP)

Our target audience includes:

  • Beginning, Intermediate, Senior and Graduate Film and Video Students in Los Angeles and San Diego. These students are actively producing projects throughout the school year and often spending in excess of $20,000 per project. Attracting a student filmmaker to your business now will result in a relationship that will continue well into the future as the student becomes a professional.
  • Independent Production Companies looking to save money on their productions. Budgets on these productions can anywhere from $30,000 to 3 million.

SALES AND CIRCULATION

We are guaranteeing your advertisement will appear in a minimum of 5,000 copies of our book. The book is kept in circulation for one year and is reprinted throughout the year as needed. Currently we are expecting to increase circulation in 2005 to as much 20,000 with our increased distribution through film schools and trad organisations. Should the book be reprinted, your advertisement will appear in an even greater number of copies. These copies will be distributed through our website, through Los Angeles and San Diego film schools (UCLA, LACC, SDSU, etc.), local trade organizations (IFP West, ASIFA, etc), film commissions, conventions (Show Biz Expo, DV Expo, etc.) and book stores (Samuel French, Script-a-Palooza, etc).

PREVIOUS CIRCULATION

  • In previous years Crew Call! was sold solely in San Diego. In the fall of 2000 our initial print run of 1,000 was primarily distributed through film school equipment check-out counters at SDSU, UCSD and Grossmont Community College. The initial run sold out and went into a second printing of another 1,000 copies that were distributed through the San Diego Film Commission to visiting and local film producers.
  • By 2001 our print run had risen to 2,500. The directories were now distributed in all 9 San Diego film schools through both equipment check-out counters and book stores. San Diego film organizations now distributed the book as well (AIVF, Circle of Films, and others.)
  • In 2002 we focused our attention to build our online database. During the height of film production we experienced as many as 1,000 unique visitors to our site a day.
  • Our 2004 edition has a print run of 5,000 copies and includes not only San Diego, but Los Angeles and Orange County as well. We are now distributed through specialty book and video supply stores such as Samuel French and Melrose Mac, trade organizations such as IFP West and ASIFA and an even wider number of film schools such as USC, UCLA and the LA Film School. Los Angeles has a vastly bigger market for film production than San Diego so we expect our distribution to expand even further in the coming years.

COMPARABLES

Although there is no publication quite like Crew Call!, comparables include directories such as The LA-411 and the Blu Book. Advertisements in Crew Call! are a fraction of the price of these directories. A web banner from LA-411 alone costs from $1,000 to $5,000. Print ads with Crew Call are not only less expensive but include a large format online ad for no additional charge.

All prices shown are in U.S. Dollars and include placement in a minimum of 5,000 copies of our books plus an advertisement and banner on our website.

  • The directory is spiral bound and its pages measure 5.5” wide x 8.5” tall.
  • Margins have been taken into account for all ad sizes.
  • We also offer inside front cover and inside back cover advertisements as well as full color card inserts. Please inquire for pricing

SUGGESTIONS FOR DESIGNING ADVERTISEMENTS

  • Less is more: providing something simple and catchy is the most effective.
  • Providing your website will allow customers to learn more about your company.
  • Offer a specific "Crew Call Discount" for students to get their attention and so you can track responce to your advertisement.
  • Feel free to make suggestions. We are ready and willing to work with you if you have ideas. In the past companies have approached us regarding card inserts, printing up special editions of the directory for a specific market and other ideas. We are generally very receptive.

MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS

We prefer completed, print-ready advertisements. However, you may also send text and graphics for us to assemble to fit your ad space for a nominal charge of $50. When designing your ad please keep any text within the type area (1cm in from edge of page on all sides). Full page advertisements may bleed off the edge of the page if desired and may therefore be created to fit 5.5” wide x 8.5”. If a bleed is desired, the image must extend 1/8” (.125”) past the page's edge to compensate for any variance during the cutting of the book.

You may send us your advertisement in two ways:

  • A printed hard copy
  • An electronic file plus a printed hard copy

Please send image files or printed hard copies at optimum resolution.

300 to 600 dpi for line art (or bitmap).

Your ad must be received in the correct format by the material due date, allowing us time to assemble the advertisement if necessary and send you a proof for your approval.

Electronic files should be supplied to us in any one of the following common formats:

  • Bitmap file
  • TIFF file
  • Photoshop
  • PDF File
  • Jpeg

Send files on any of the following:

  • PC readable floppy disc
  • PC readable CD Rom disc
  • PC readable Zip disc

Remember, a Macintosh can read a PC disc, but a PC cannot read a Macintosh disc. We are working on PC’s for the foreseeable future.

You may also make arrangements to e-mail your advertisement to us as an attachment but we prefer disc and hard copies.


INTERNET ADVERTISING

Print advertisements are just the beginning. We will also place your online advertisement on CrewCallDirectory.com to be viewed by a still wider audience. CrewCallDirectory.com ads are Free with purchase of book ad space.

For Web ad space by itself is $350 for 12 months, simultaneously to the time the directory with your advertisement is in stores.

ONLINE AD SPECIFICATIONS
IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS

  • Our web banners are 4” wide by 2” high or 2” wide by 4” high. Depending on your needs you may submit one or the other or both. If you need to send a larger banner or image we may need to scale it down.
  • For animated banners, we insist that the banner cycles through no more than 3 times. Otherwise it can become far too distracting.
  • If you are unable to provide us with a banner, we will insert your company’s name in a large bold font.
  • All Banners are subject to our approval.
